The Cover Up
Happy New Years! To ring in 2008, the weather has decided to dip. We are forecasted to have a low of 17 tonight! 13 for tomorrow! And here I thought I lived in warm, tropical Florida. I can't remember the last time we've had a hard freeze like this. It is a complete guess about which plants will make it through the frost and which won't. One of my prized plants is the bird of paradise.
Here is what it looked like this morning:
I knew I'd have to cover it this evening, but it is getting too big for my sheets. So, even though it killed me a little bit, I hacked about 10-12 leaves off the top. The leaves won't survive the frost anyway, and my main goal is to keep the plant alive. So right now it looks like this:
There is a silver lining. I now have lovely table centerpieces:

Happy New Year! I'm sure your Bird of Paradise will look beautiful once it recovers from it's trim.
Gosh, that really is cold for your neck of the woods but it's great to see you are looking at the bright side. I love having large leaves to bring in to the house though we never have anything that lovely and large, even in full summer. Oops as I wrote that I realized that's not so ... I bring in the occasional rhubarb leaf and put it in a vase. Yours is so much more elegant though!

That's awesome and a clever use of the foliage.
I thought of you when I saw on the weather forcast that it was to freeze down your way. I think you will do ok if it doesn't last more than a day or so. Good luck.
Happy New Year
Thanks for the warm thoughts, guys!
Thank you for all of the lovely photos! We have snow on the ground and I think it's going to be here awhile. Bummer that you had to trim the Bird of Paradise - what a beautiful plant! - but the leaves look lovely on your table.
The photos from your MIL's are wonderful - cannas growing along the bank of the river totally blows me away! Very pretty.
Best wishes for the new year.
Okay, what did they look like this morning? Good thing that they come back, right? I have to tell you that I used to read your blog all of the time, and then I lost the address. I am so happy that you found me! You have a great yard, and you've done so many nice things.
What a lovely modern centerpeice for your table! Love that!
Kris and Julie - Thanks for your comments. The leaves still look nice on the table. I think I'll have to do this again!
Sue - Welcome back! I have not yet looked at the damage, mostly because I leave home for work when it is dark and come back home in the dark. I'll have to wait until the weekend to see it in the daylight.
